The “Alta Via dell’Adamello” (Adamello Trek) is a trekking trail that runs through the Adamello mountain range. Its 50 kilometres take at least 6 days to walk from Bazena (near the Crocedomini pass) to Avio Lakes, below the Adamello North Face. Along the route you will find no towns or villages. The trail winds through the mountains, passing places of great natural and environmental importance, all within the boundaries of the Adamello Park. The Park covers an area of 510 square kilometres. Together with the Adamello-Brenta, Stelvio and Engadine Parks, it forms the largest protected area in the Alps.

First stage
The first stretch of the Trek goes through the most interesting areas in the Park for flowers. From mid June to the end of July, the rare endemic species typical of this area can be admired in all their glory. The path crosses the “Val Fredda botanical route”, which gives us a chance to see local wild flowers, with the help of numerous dedicated information boards. This stretch of the trail also crosses the huge Crocedomini pastures, well-known for their flourishing animal farms in the Summer, famous for the breading of milk cows and the goodness of the cheeses produced here. From June to October, you can still come a across herds of cows, find the herdsmen shelters occupied by farmers and buy some Silter cheese produced here.

Minivan transfer from Boario to Bazena (1h). From Rifugio Tassara (1800m), we follow trail number 1 along a military mule track through Val Fredda to the Val Fredda Pass. From here we follow the trail across the upper part of Val Cadino to the Passo della Vacca. Large granite slabs will lead us to Rifugio Tita Secchi (2367m) next to a lake.
Time: 2h, 15min
Up hill: 567m
Down hill: 45m

Second stage
The next two stretches allow us to discover valuable relics from the Guerra Bianca (White War, the name given to the First World War that was fought here). From the main trail, or on short diversions towards the Sega d’Arno ridge, we can still see artillery posts, caves used as shelters and the remains of barracks where soldiers camped.

From the lodge, the trail rises to the Blumone Pass, drops down into the Gelino valley and then climbs up hill again to the Brescia Pass. This is a fairly long stage, mainly on moraine terrain, with a short but easy stretch equipped with a wire cable up to the Bocchetta di Brescia. Tonight’s lodge is called Rifugio Maria e Franco (2574m).
Time: 5h, 30min
Up hill: 686m
Down hill: 474m

Third stage
From Rifugio Maria e Franco, the trail descends to the Dernal Lake and then climbs up to the Ignaga Pass, reached by following a path along a narrow ridge. From the Pass, we follow an exposed war time trail, equipped with wire cables, which leads to Rifugio Lissone (2020m).
Time: 5h, 15min
Up hill: 260m
Down hill: 789m

Forth stage
Wonderful Valle Adamè opens up to those following the Alta Via dell’Adamello beyond the Lissone lodge: it is a wide valley smoothed over thousands of years by the glacier that gives its typical U shape. The Adamè River, fed directly by the Adamello Glacier, runs down the whole valley. Not far from Rifugio Lissone, we can find Malga Adamè (a herdsmen shelter), where local farms bring their goats for Summer grazing. The “Bionda dell’Adamello” (a native breed goat) has a hazelnut coloured coat that turns blonde (bionda) under the Summer sun. The milk produced by this breed is used to make “Fatulì”, a goats’ cheese smoked over juniper branches.

From the lodge, we walk up the right hand side of the Valle Adamè to the Poia Pass. There may be some snow on either side of the Pass. Down hill all the way to Rifugio Prudenzini (2235m).
Time: 4h, 45min
Up hill: 758m
Down hill: 550m

Fifth stage
The ridges of the Salarno and Miller Valleys and the perfect habitat for the rare Snow Grouse, a mimetic Tetranoid that lives and nests in this harsh environment. The Baitone Valley is without doubt the best place to spot Chamois Deer and Ibex. The later has become one of the symbols of the Park’s activities following the reintroduction project that started in 1995, which has allowed the return of this royal bovid to an area where it had become extinct in 1700. It can be seen quite frequently near the Baitone dam, just a short distance from the hiking trail.

From Rifugio Pridenzini we walk along the Southern ridge of the Prudenzini peak and then up to the Miller Pass. From here, a steep trail leads down to Val Miller and Rifugio Gnutti. We continue along a narrow path to the Gatto Pass. Some stretches have fixed ropes due to their exposure. After the Remulo gorge, the trail rises gradually to Rifugio Baitone and then to Rifugio Tonolini (2450m).
Time: 5h, 30min
Up hill: 940m
Down hill: 715m

Sixth stage
Apart from the majesty of its glacial cirques,  the presence of the impressive ENEL hydroelectric reservoirs and their industrial archaeology, Val d’Avio is also characterised by the constant looming presence of the North face of Monte Adamello, a symbol both of the Park and of the mountain range itself. At 3554 metres above sea level, the peak juts out of the Adamello Glacier (also known as Pian di Neve), the biggest in Italy and the only one in the Alps to feature the typical Scandinavian plateau glacial configuration.

From the lodge, the trail rises across terrain with large boulders and then along a steep path leading to the Premassone Pass. The Pass is on the watershed between the Baitone Valley and the Avio Valley. From the Pass we cross on the left along a short ledge and down some steep steps (assisted with some wire cables) to the Pantano Lake. From here we can descend to the Laghi d’Avio where a minivan will meet us. Transfer back to Boario (1h, 30min).
Time: 5h
Up hill: 473m
Down hill: 1023m
