Montecampione

Montecampione ski resort is the closest, largest and best value resort close to Bergamo airport, but what is happening to the management ?

It is difficult to comprehend why Montecampione today has debts of x million and needs new investment in Infrastructure. A great resort with no leadership ?

Montecampione

Montecampione

Maybe the answer lies in the fact that despite increasing international vistors the number of Italian visitors has dropped. This may be partly due to a decreased passion for the sport (we all remember the days of Alberto Tomba and the wave of ski mania across Italy).  Certainly a lack of planning and leadership has caused Montecampione to remain, on one hand, a great and much loved resort but behind the scenes it appears to have been left without a serious strategy to position the resort and attact new customers through exhibitions, local and national publicity and PR. The only company actively promoting Montecampione Internationally is Monticolo Vacanze and ActivityBreaks.

So where are we today ? Well to be honest, exactly the same place as the last few years with continued uncertainty over who will step up to the plate and have the vision (and money) to move Montecampione forward.

One thing is for sure, Montecampione remains a premier resort for ski weekends and ski weeks in an ideal location.

Lake Iseo just got even better

In previous blogs we have talked about the beauty, accessibility and low cost of a lake Iseo holidays.  But recently there has been a growing focus on developing services and activities. At the Northen end of lake Iseo this has been driven by Monticolo Vacanze. We were the first to support the opening of the Sportaction lakeside water centre (now a private club) and the first to work closely with the lakeside train company to offer packages that gave freedom of movement. Now we are working together with our partners and the local government to bring canoeing, boat hire, bike hire and more to the pretty port town of Pisogne.

Pisogne, lake Iseo

Pisogne, lake Iseo

Pisogne, in the last few years, has created a waterfront promenade and central square of stunning beauty and together with local events, services, restaurants and more, the town has become a serious rival to its neighbour Lovere and to its big cousin Iseo town.

Last year one family, having spent a week with us, commented “We’ve had loads of activities to do and lots of relaxing moments, a unique combination in a unique place.”

Why not find out for yourself, it’s just 50 mins from the low cost airport of Bergamo. See our packages with activities included and a warm welcome awaits you here in our Italian piece of heaven !

Lake Iseo Videos

Given the beauty and facilities offered around lake Iseo, we have made a series of videos about the area and the activities available, along with two great holiday packages.

If you follow this link to lake Iseo and select our “Activities Video page” link there are many videos on lake Iseo and the surrounding area.

Lake Iseo Video

Lake Iseo Video

The main destination video covers both lake Iseo and the valley above including the beautiful spa town of Boario Terme. It also shows many activities available in the area, some of which we include in our holidays.

The second video shows the relative location of Lake Iseo in Italy. Strange to think that such a large lake with Europes largest inland Island is so hard to find !

The third video is a collage off pictures of Lake Iseo….a great introduction to the Lake and her Islands.

To visit this area just click on “Summer” in the menu above the video and there are two fantastic value breaks. One is based in Boario Spa Town with loads of lake and valley activities INCLUDED in price. The second is a luxury break on Lake Iseo itself.

So check out the video and then experience it yourself. Lake Iseo is “Italy’s hidden gem”.

Lake iseo Train

Our new summer packages for a great holiday on Lake Iseo, Italy, all include free pass on the historic lakeside train “treno dell’acqua” (the water train).

Travelling from the famous spa and spring waters of Boario Terme town to the waters of Lake Iseo. This 33 km stretch of line was built in 1907 and the tunnels through the lower Alps were carved out be hand. You can still see today the holes in the tunnels which were used to ventilate the tunnel of steam.
Panoramic views across this beautiful lake including of the famous Monte Isola island (the largest inland island in Europe) and the tiny Islands surrounding it. Travelling North you are rewarded with views of the Alpine Camonica Valley.
In summer the temperature sits around 30 degrees with a cooling mountain breeze in the evening and the area is packed with lake and land activities (many of which we include for free in our holidays).
So come and discover lake Iseo for yourself, staying in a 3 star or 4 star hotel and travel the “water line”, a train ride to remember and an easy and effective way of seeing Lake Iseo and lower Valle Camonica.

Lake Iseo may not be well known but it is large, beautiful and characteristic. Still unspoilt by the mass tourism of its neighbours

New Luxury Lake Iseo Holiday

Lake Iseo HolidayMonticolo is pleased to announce the launch of a luxury Lake Iseo Holiday package. Combining 4 star luxury in an Historic hotel with pool on edge of lake together with private motor boats or sailing and excursions including moonlight champagne cruise of the 3 Islands !

Half board package together with free parking and free use of pool. This package can be combined with our multi activity package to give cut price activities included in the price.

Lake Iseo may be unknown to many people but ironically it is just 20 mins from one of Italy’s most important low cost airports, Bergamo Milan Orio. It is at the foothills of the Alps and the dramatic scenary is a major attraction. The lake itself is 16 km long with 3 islands. Two of the Islands are the size of a large house (and have a large house on them), the other Island is Monte Isola, Europes largest inland Island with pretty fishing villages dotted along the lake shore.

A Lake Iseo Holiday is a real taste of Italy in an area yet to be spoilt by mass tourism and prices some 30% less than that of it’s neighbour, Lake garda.

But perhaps the thing you will remember most of your Lake Iseo Holiday is the warm welcome from the locals who genuinely love having foreign visitors and whilst they may not speak much English they express themselves with hands, smiles and a dictionary !

Take a Lake Iseo Holiday and save, remember, relax and enjoy the difference.

Lake Iseo Holidays

Lake iseo is one of Italy’s prettiest lakes, yet is undiscovered by tourists, giving it a fresh, non commercial feel. Over 16 kms long and with Europes largest inland island, why don’t you come and discover it’s charm for yourself with this unique Lake Iseo package which includes daily free passage on the remarkable and Historic “Treno dell Acqua” train line along edge of lake. Also included is a free trip around lake on ferry boat.

Lake iseo Holiday

Lake iseo Holiday

This Lake iseo Holiday package is by local operator Monticolo Vacanze and also includes free canoeing, multi pool complex, Adventure park, bike hire and lakeside pool park. Something for everyone and a great opportunity to see one of Lombardia’s prettiest regions.

The lack of “package tourists” means prices are reasonable (7 euro for a pizza !) and it is a “real taste of Italy”. You can stay in a 3 star with pool, a luxury 4 star spa hotel or a Luxury lakeside hotel but wherever you stay, it will be a memory to cherish.

Montecampione opens all doors

After an unpredictable 6 weeks with snow on, snow off, The Montecampione resort has opened all runs.

There has been quite alot of snow, but with temperatures at below -15 degrees it is very light snow which needed to be compacted. With the sun out it is quite pleasant but bring layered and warm clothing for skiing and something to cover your ears which are the first thing to freeze !

Montecampione has suffered like other resorts from unpredictable snowfall and has had the worse snow fall in it’s history …until now.

The Montecampione ski resort is in full operation with the pool at the Splaza also open and a busy couple of weeks ahead with more snow forecast but then again, who believes the snow forecast reports anymore this season !

Montecampione Ski resort Update

Overnight snow, lower temperatures and dedicated staff mean more slopes open with Black run “Canalone” (1200 mts) opening Wednesday with “Valmaione” (1200mts) close behind. This will give some depth to the 1200 La Splaza options. By end of week the dotted line slopes and maybe the complete connection across top from Splaza to Baite are targeted with the two “Dosso slopes” most likely to be available in a couple of days..

The Resort opens more slopes

Montecampione is adding more slopes

.. Coming to Montecampione, then be re-assured that the resort is open and adding slopes now almost daily.

OUR ADVICE

If at La Splaza 1200. Then use Splaza slopes.

If at Le Baite 1800. Then use Baite slopes.

If in Boario. Then use the 1200mts Splaza slopes. (If you have a car you can pop up to 1800 ofcourse)

Hopefully the two will soon be connected. That is what the owners predict for coming weekend “assuming stable conditions”. The dotted lines are predicted to open before next week, they are not open today. Solid lines are open or should open in next two days.

Our thanks to ski school Fodestal and Montecampione Ski management for their expert advice and technical support.

What’s the story with the Snow.

It is many years since the ENTIRE Alps have been robbed of snow when technically the season has started. Panic for customers and for Tour operators.

Be reassured, Monticolo Vacanze, ActivityBreaks.com and the Montecampione ski resort take the situation very seriously. So what is happening.

Firstly Monticoloand Activity only opened availability from 17 december allowing for a disaster. Last year this mean’t we had empty Hotels and apartments as the snow was on time, but we prefer to do whatever possible to ensure snow, so we always allow an extra week. We are not responasble for the snow but we do what we can.

Secondly, this delay will pay some dividends as week starting 17 december will be good at 1800mts and artificial at 1200mts. So what’s the forecast, we monitor this carefully.

Montecampione1800 web cam white out

As I write it is snowing at Le Baite 1800mts and 3 runs are opening this weekend. More snow is expected next week even at lower levels but not in large quantities, however it will be cold enough for the cannons to be activated.

Around the 16th, 17th a larger dump of snow is expected across all the Montecampione resort. We remain optimistic that before christmas the snow coverage will be good to excellent (but we do not control the snow, and forecasts can change for the better or worse). So from Montecampione, we wish you a Merry christmas and watch our home page twitter feed for on site reports on the conditions.

Oh …and ofcourse let it snow, let it snow, let it snow !

Christmas in Boario Terme

The area behind Bergamo that includes lake Iseo, Valle Camonica, Boario terme and the Montecampione ski resort is a real slice of Italy. Unspoilt, not expensive and still full of the old traditions of the region.
Anybody from northern Europe or America would find that life is different here, and so is Christmas ! Children get presents on St Lucia day 13 December and at Christmas their stockings are empty, actually they don’t have stockings. No roast turkey for Christmas lunch, infact many go out to a restaurant.
The school Christmas holidays are short but it’s not only the kids who take a break. many companies shut down for up to a week.
The family is the heart of christmas as it should be. The christmas lights of Boario terme and Montecampione welcome ski fanatics getting their yearly fix along with a ….real slice of Italy.

The Fanchini sisters interview

The resort with 3 real stars and a big heart.

Since the days of Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni, when Italians were glued to their televisions for every Ski event with a mixture of national pride and personal admiration for the athletes skill and speed, Italian ski has been left without a real star. Then the Picturesque ski resort of Montecampione near Bergamo produced not one but 3 emerging stars, all sisters and all dedicated to their sport, their team and to their home, Montecampione.

Fanchini sisters relaxed

Struck by misfortune and injury the sisters may have their best years ahead of them.
It was a cool wet autumn day that I made my way up from Valle Camonica to Montecampione to visit the sisters, Elena, Nadia and Sabrina in their home just a few hundred meters from the slopes of the ski resort. The spectacular views down the valley and across to Lake Iseo combined with the multicoloured hues of the falling leaves gave an almost mystical feel to the day.

Their mother Giusi, greeted me warmly and made coffee as the girls came into the room relaxed and happy to talk about themselves, family and their beloved home, Montecampione.

“We all learnt to ski at about 3 years of age” explains Elena, “Our father, who works on Montecampione, supported us and encouraged us and I remember heading to the ski slopes of Montecampione instead of kindergarten” she adds with a smile.
The story since then writes itself, with all three sisters becoming national junior or senior champions with Podium finishes in the world championships. Elena won her fist world ski championship race in 2005 in Lake Louise Canada and recently won the FISI competition Cerro Castor, Argentina,

Sorelle Fanchini

Nadia won three world titles at Junior level before being seriously injured by breaking both knees in St Moritz in January 2010 and more recently sustaining a further break in Cortina. She was upbeat about her fitness “I still need a few more months and I have not yet decided when to return to full competition, but I’m feeling good” she states confidently and I have a feeling we have alot to look forward to from Elena and Nadia as the Russian Olympics approach.

Sabrina is the youngest, full of energy and a lively character who must surely be the surprise package for the coming years. “I love skiing and I love where I live here at Montecampione” she says whilst looking out of the window over a beautiful Autumn mountainside scene. “When I can come home in winter I practice on Montecampione together with my sisters or with friends”.

Given that Montecampione is a compact resort, smaller than the brand names around it, what is it about Montecampione that encouraged them to ski at 3 years and still draws them to her slopes even today, Elena reflects “the continues connection of varied ski runs from  2000mts all the way down to base station at 1200mts, the quality of the slopes and the spectacular views whilst skiing are all things we love about this resort.”
Despite their success, misfortune and injury they remain warm, approachable and relaxed, the only thing that caused some concern was my offer to do the interview in English ! A language they understand but have not yet apparently mastered.

They travel each year to over 15 countries and many different resorts, each has a strong memories of some world class resorts, yet here on a wet Saturday in November with the trees changing colour and the air beginning to shimmer with the advent of snow, all three are in their parents house in Montecampione, The place they call home, where they learnt to ski and where they train, where there father works and where the locals are proud to celebrate “Fanchini day” and Montecampione is proud to call them her own. Home is where the heart is and Montecampione has proved not only to have great runs but a big heart too.

Montecampione Ski resort, the home of champions !

This weekend I’ve been invited by The Fanchini sisters to have a chat about their early experiences learning to ski on Montecampione and how, from that they all 3 became national champions and had success worldwide.

Nadia

I will ask them their plans for the future and the impact injury has had in the past years especially to Elena.

Montecampione is a compact and stimulating resort to learn to ski, and ofcourse it’s very close to Bergamo airport. To produce one champion is significant but to have produced 3 Italian team stars is unique.

I will publish the article in full and hope to get some pictures to go with it. This same article will be published by wizz air and other ski magazines. Montecampione and it’s lower resort town of Boario terme are truelly making an impact on the european market.
I end by giving my thanks in advance to the Fanchini family and hope they understand my Italian !

Ski Bergamo area of Italy

With so many low cost airlines flying into the ski Bergamo area through Bergamo airport it is strange that most people head for the overcrowded and expensive resort of Tonale and miss the local resorts like Presolana, Foppolo and Montecampione.

The most important of which is Montecampione ski resort just 50 mins from Bergamo airport.  Perfect for a short ski holiday or a one week stay with a range of apartments, Hotels and luxury spa hotels to choose from. Perhaps the biggest plus is the price which, like for like, is 30 to 50% cheaper than the branded resorts and the slopes are so much less crowded.

So if you wish to ski Bergamo then check out Montecampione and get a better deal !

Monticolo Vacanze, the local specialist operator and owner UK based ActivityBreaks.com, has broken their own receord with forward bookings for the Montecampione ski resort, near Bergamo.

Despite Hard economic times, it appears people still want their ski fix and more than ever they are combining with friends or business colleagues to get a better deal. Monticolo have attracted a  large number of group bookings from the UK, Ireland, Holland and Poland.

Monticolo is the largest local  operator and has up to 500 guests at any time. Based in the valley below the resort in Boario Terme, the company specialises in personal packages that include ski hire and ski passes in a “direct to supplier” price given that the Monticolo group also owns Hotels and apartements.

There’s a party in the street tonight.

One of the special things about Valle Camonica is that there is always a street party going on somewhere. With over 500 villages stretching from Lake iseo through Boario Terme and up to Ponte di Legno, you can easily find yourself in the middle of a street party.

Join the Party

Normally a large tent is erected and wooden tables and benches appear. Up to 50 locals volunteer to cook and serve local specialities.
All you have to do is turn up and eat ( a small charge is applied depending on what you decide on).
Ofcourse most of the village is there so there is plenty to shout about !
Then the music starts and goes on till early morning.

Some parties become “notte bianca” all night parties all accross the town with numerous outside eating and entertainment points.

So next time you are in Valle Camonica, look for the party !

Boario Terme film first

 Follow my blog with Bloglovin

The first ever web film of  Boario Terme was published recently.
Over 20 hours of film was condensed into just 4 minutes, allowing the editor to show the Activities and scenerary in a short concise and exciting video, the very first of it’s kind on the web, especially made to promote the area around Boario Terme .

Boario Terme Film

Fast music , dramatic sweeping shots from the air and loads of fun activities demonstrate the special nature of this haven nestled just behind Bergamo.

The local government and local businesses have all contributed to the film, making it a truely “Made in Valle Camonica” effort.

New original music is currently being composed by a local band as an alternative to the current version. It will then be uploaded onto YouTube and other locations across the web.

Check it out !

Boario Terme. The heat is on !

I have lived in Valle Camonica for over 25 years and have never had such a long hot August with temperatures touching 38 degrees and no rain in site.

Some friends joined us recently and whilst taking the Iseo ferry boat ride and walking through the treetops and taking the Alpine coaster were all apparently amazing fun, the winner was the Boario terme Aquaplanet water park. Cool, refreshing and with spectacular views up the Alps !

Aquaplanet Boario

The other solution our friends took was to go upto Montecampione ski resort where the air was cooler (but no snow yet folks !)

But dinner on the Veranda overlooking the valley with a cool bottle of white wine had to be the stuff that memories are made of.

Coming soon a brand new 4 minute web video on Boario Terme…watch this space !

Ironically we have just had 21 electrical solar panels installed on our roof, but due to the Italian close down in mid August they were never attached in time to the grid, otherwise we would be powering the town with so much sun !
